MVX wins award
Sentient’s new 3D visualisation technology MVX has been recognised with a reward for excellence and innovation.
The software was highly commended at the Zenith PACE awards in Melbourne recently in the Metal Products Manufacturing area. The annual awards recognise and reward leadership in engineering and technology.
MVX is the culmination of more than 10 years of organic development and collaboration between two Perth software companies, Sentient Computing and Torq Software, and their principals, Doug Bester and Apolon Ivankovic.
Doug Bester said: “It was fantastic to see home-grown Australian technology do so well, especially considering the large international companies we were competing against.”
The software, MVX, applies 3D game engine technology to the visualisation of commercial data. It combines real and virtual data, revolutionising the way people access, interact and understand data. It can be used in a wide range of situations from sales and marketing, operations, training, safety, construction and managing staff and plant in remote locations.
For the past ten months, Doug and Apolon have focused on transforming traditional two-dimensional views of operations into more user-friendly data-rich three dimensions. Static 2D representations are not directly representative of real world scenarios and do not include important spatial information such as distance, size, height, orientation and location.
However, people have a powerful ability to interpret 3D information rapidly and intuitively. Complex concepts can be easily explained and understood quickly. Operators can meet with experts and colleagues inside the virtual environment. Although they may be sitting in offices in different parts of the world, they can discuss issues of concern, point to particular features, change settings and improve the function of equipment in real time. The savings in terms of time, travel costs, training and improved decision making, as well as the enhanced safety of minimising the number of people on site, can be significant.
MVX can be used to induct new staff and make sure they are comfortable with an operation before being exposed to it in real life, especially in hazardous environments such as factories or processing plants. Training courses or simulated procedures can be delivered in a similar manner.
